A Twist On The #FollowFriday Tweet.

Business, Twitter, Your Best Self, coaching No Comments »

A few days after I first came on the Twitter scene, I became aware of #FollowFriday. What a great Idea, or so I had thought. I’m sure that when it has started off it was a great way to recommend fellow tweeters, but with the advent of #FollowFriday generators and general abuse of its essence, it has begun to lose its luster. Now it is an opportunity for you to have a moment of elation before you realize that it is a computer program that is recommending the follow.

So I’d Like to Share with you a Four step process for giving compliments in general that you might apply to your #FollowFriday tweets.

When you are going to recognize someone for the gifts and strengths that lie within them the last thing you want to say is:

Your doing a good job

or

You look nice.

When people here statements like that, they immediately shut you out. They feel you are being totally prefabricated.

When it comes to a compliment you need Four Elements. Be ; Sincere, Specific, Succinct, Generous

Be Sincere – Make sure your compliment is for the purpose of recognizing the strengths in the other person. This in not about how they make you feel, its about the greatness you want to acknowledge in them.

Be Specific – What is it that they did? What strengths did they use? What impact have they made? Being specific shows that you took the time to notice who they “BE”

Be Succinct – Bottom line it. There is know need for a big foot shuffling introduction. Get right to what is most important to they person, the positive acknowledgment that they (and everyone else in the world) hunger for

Be Generous – The more time you spend looking for opportunities to compliment others, the more happy and productive they will become. As an added benefit the people that you lift up through your generosity of words will in turn want to carry you higher as well.

So My Twist For #Follow Friday

  • Pic 2-5 tweeters that you Sincerely want to recommend today.
  • Take the time to really share with others Specifically what you like about the tweeter.
  • Succinct?? Well you have 140 character spaces, less the username. So make sure you don’t try to do more than one # follow Friday at a time.
  • Generous? The more you selflessly give the more you will ultimately receive.

Have a great weekend.

Did You Know That You Are A Master?

When I was eleven I watched a martial arts movie called “The Last Dragon”. It was my favorite movie at that time (It is amazing how different the movie is through the eyes of a 36 year old). Anyway. Though I could hardly remember the movie, the final scene always stuck with me. Bruce Leroy is taking a beating from the bad guy. The bad guy keeps asking “Who is the master”? In the final moments Bruce Leroy, whilst having his head dunked in water suddenly realizes what was right inside him all along. Bruce Leroy is the master. At that point he starts glowing does some really cool Bruce Lee hand waving and wins the day.

I did a search and found the ending on the web.  Watching it got me wondering, how often do you go through life never realizing the mastery that lies within you?
We are so busy being hard on ourselves that we never take the time to appreciate all that we have achieved, all the gifts that we have.  We might justify this by saying we don’t want to become lazy or too full of ourselves, but in truth we are are hardest critics (yes even harder than our mothers).

When we focus on our talents and our accomplishments, we have the opportunity to become energized. Thought we might not get a visible golden aura about us, a person that is energized by their gift is more visibly alive.

If you don’t believe me, take 2-3 min to right down all your gifts, talents and accomplishments, then read them aloud. You will be amazed at the added energy.
Imagine starting everyday off with this mindset.

Remember. You Are A Master.

Are You Defense Strong and Attack Weak?

Business, Uncategorized, Your Best Self, coaching No Comments »

On Wednesday I was playing Squash (my microcosm for reflective growth). Though he was scoring more points, I was doing a good Job of holding off my opponent. The strange thing was that when I had the serve, the level of my game dropped drastically. When I had to defend I brought my skills and strengths to the forefront but when I was on the attack, it was if I had fallen asleep.

I reflected on how this plays out in our business success.

Many times I have heard people say; “I just can’t take it to the next level” or “I know what has to be done, why can’t I succeed?”

I think that herein lies a key.

When we have to Defend what we have already built, we draw on the abilities that we have, we strengthen our resolve and we ensure survival. We do this because the alternatives are often to scary. We would either have to lose what we have built, or start over again.

When it comes to the Attack, the attempt to move forward, we tend to fall into complacency , we hesitate to take steps that might represent to much change, because change is really scary (at least that is what we convince ourselves to be true). As a result we hold back, we don’t draw on all that we have. We create the failure where it had no need to exist.

So what can you do to overcome.

One way is to visualize in your mind what the amazing outcome will be when you move forward. Another is to recognize the strengths and abilities that have brought you to where you are now, and accept that if you have gotten “here” then you can get “there”

The goal is to cultivate your abilities till you become Defense and Attack Strong. Then not only will you be able to hold your ground when the storm rages against, but you will also be able to reach the heights of your success when the way is open to you.
