Are We Missing Out On Excellence?

Your Best Self No Comments »

What do Will Smith, Luciano Pavarotti, Dr. Phil McGraw, Tiger Woods and CEO’s at Time Warner all have in common?

They have all had personal coaches.

Not only before they became famous, but also since they have risen to the tops in their fields.

What do they know that we don’t?
Why would they hire someone that hasn’t achieved their level off success, to help them become and stay at their best?

With a new year comes reflection.

What we did.
What we didn’t.
What we knew we could have, if we would have just done…. <- This is where coaching comes in.

At the heart of coaching are three steps.

1. Insight and Issues
A coach helps you to develop clarity of your values, goals, passion, and purpose. It is a deep explorations into who you are and what you want to achieve. Through this insight you become aware of what you want to work on in order to be your best.

2. Choice and Commitment.
With a goal in mind the coach helps you draw from within the best steps that are required to achieve your goal. With the the big picture in mind the coach reaffirms your commitment to seeing the goal through.

3. Action and Accountability.
Most gloals cannot be reached in a single step. There are often many steps in the process of goal achievement. Your coach helps you to decide on the first steps, and hold you accountable, and ensures that you stay on track.

Step three is what differentiates a good coach from a good friend. A friend is there to listen and share ideas, a coach is there to make sure you follow through.

I often here stories of these Olympic athletes that go to the gym to train at 5:30 in the morning. Though you could say that it is their passion for what they do that gets them out of bed in the morning, I contend that it is the coach that is at the gym at 5:20am waiting form them, that prevents them from hitting the snooze button just one more time.

We can always justify ourselves out of doing anything, we are very convincing when it comes to talking to ourselves. When you tell a coach where you want to go, he won’t take any excuses, he won’t permit you to achieve anything less then your best, because that is what you have asked him to do.

These people knew what they wanted to be, and ensured that they had a coach that would see them through to the end.

This is not just for the stars.

Whether it is business, personal, or relationship.
Where do you want to be in your future?
How will you stay on track?

Something to think about…
