28. Don’t Waste Your Time. Be Prepared.

This is one of the lessons I learned from my Best Buy experience (based on the post 27. Best Buy? Maybe. Best Service? It’s OK. Best Knowledge? I Think I Hear My Mom Calling.)

ÂÂ

ÂÂ

In getting my new LCD monitor, I had wasted so much time because I didn’t know exactly what I needed. Furthermore even when I thought I was getting what I needed, I neglected to check the product to be sure it was right. This resulted in hours wasted, going back an forth to the store (three times so far, and a fourth tomorrow), and fiddling around with the computer (graphics card in graphics card out, cable in cable out, modify this, modify that). Hours that could have been used for growth, became hours that were flushed away.

Here are 4 tips to ensure you don’t wast your time.

  • Know what you want- With the wealth of information on the Internet is easy to researcher any thing you want to buy. Many online stores like www.nextag.com even have reviews, so you can be informed about the pros and cons of the things you want to buy. Be careful of over analysis. You shouldn’t need more than an hour to get all the info. you need on a big ticked item.

ÂÂ

  • Prepare questions. Ask Questions- For example. When buying a graphics card for your computer, check what operating system you are running, what type of mother board you have, what is the age of your computer, what kind of monitor? Do you want to have the graphics card for gaming or working and watching the occasional movie. When you got to the store ask your questions. Be sure that the card will work based on all the information you have.

ÂÂ

ÂÂ

  • Check before you buy- So much time is wasted, just by not verifying that you have the right item or that it works. Your time is valuable, ask the sales person to open up the item to be sure it is what you want. Or if you are buying something like a TV ask them to open it up and plug it in. Make sure there are no cracks or scratches and that the TV works.

ÂÂ

ÂÂ

  • Know the return policy- You are a busy person. Just because you made the time to go and buy something, doesn’t mean you will have the time to go back right away to correct any problems. Know what a stores return and refund policies are, so if you do have any difficulties with your product you can correct it in time and not get stuck with something you don’ want.

ÂÂ

Remember.

Time can be wasted but never recycled.
