11. What’s Right, What’s Fun?

I wrote this in 1998 after seeing the movie Spheres.

In this movie the characters (played by Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel l. Jackson) come in contact with this alien sphere, that gives them the ability to make their imagination reality, as a result of this, terrible things happen in the movie many people die. They try to kill each other, because of the paranoia that is created, and eventually the hole underwater station is destroyed. In the end the three main characters decide that they have to agree to forget about their ability, because they/the human race is not ready to deal with having their thoughts a reality. Their thoughts result in destruction and death.

After seeing this movie I got to thinking, why is it that we think this way, what is it that we look towards for our growth? When I look at what moves our world, I see materialism, and entertainment, or to put it more clearly, what we wear, what we watch, and do for fun. When looking at what we watch for entertainment, one can see that we are attracted to things that elicit and intense emotional reaction, Suspense, action, violence, sex, humor. Although you may question what is wrong with some of these areas of attraction, you will see in the following paragraphs where I am leading.

The question I am asking is; Are we doing what is right, or what is proper?

People gain pleasure from watching people hurting each other, people, fighting, dying, people making fun of other people and degrading them, sexual violence and degradation. We go to see things that are very immoral and unethical. We have become desensitized to the events in this world because entertainment has taught us to do so.

I have asked myself this question, because it is something worth thinking about.

Do we do what’s right or what’s fun? Many times we can define the correctness in our actions, if we would put ourselves in the same situation, and see how it makes us feel. Would you enjoy being hurt by people, being made fun of, being stalked, being robbed, raped, assaulted? If not, then why take pleasure in entertainment of such a nature.

We must take the time to look at where society is headed and what is bringing us there. Who is doing the thinking for us, who is controlling our actions. Are we doing what is right? I’ve heard the statement made positive mind positive actions, negative mind negative actions. What is it that we are putting in our minds, how are we defining ourselves, by us or by TV.

Think on it…
